DOG TOWN CANINE RESCUE… What we do:

1. Rescue: Dog Town Canine Rescue is an all volunteer, all breed, non-profit,
501 (c) 3, grassroots, hands-on, blood and guts, sometimes on-the-edge
rescue that focuses on dogs scheduled to be euthanized in public shelters,
dogs that have been abandoned, or dogs coming from homes who can no
longer care for them.
We provide transitional housing for these dogs, usually 2 – 3 weeks, before
they are adopted out to new homes. While we cannot keep up with the
onslaught of incoming dogs, we have successfully rescued over 600 dogs
in our first three years of existence.

2. Rehab: Currently most of our rescued dogs are in registered foster homes,
where they have a chance to relearn their dog skills, and receive love and
care. This gives us a better opportunity to observe their behavior and needs,
which will make finding them an appropriate home that much easier. Most
dogs find themselves in shelter situations due to issues easily remedied by our experienced volunteers. People are too quick to give up on their dogs, and surrender them to almost certain doom in a shelter. Dogs with behavioral issues are usually passed on by potential adopters, and rarely make it out alive. These dogs are then vaccinated, spayed or neutered, and put up for adoption.

3. Rehome: We hold monthly adoption days at the PetSmart store on Fairview Drive and at PetCo on Topsy Lane in Carson City. We also have dogs available from our website on Petfinder (www.dogtown.petfinder.com) every day of the year, with an average of 25 – 30 dogs and puppies available at any given time. We require both an Adoption Application, and an Adoption Agreement, which is a legally binding contract, whereby the adopter is required to return the dog to us, should things not work out. We also reserve the right to deny adoption to anyone we feel will not be a responsible dog owner. We ask for a 100.00 tax deductible adoption donation for each dog, which includes the dog being altered and fully vaccinated. With local veterinary rates running from 105.00 – 211.00 for simple sterilizations, we are continually seeking veterinarians willing to help offset our cost of saving lives.

4. Education: We try to educate the public about the importance of spay/neuter and responsible pet ownership. We also attempt to encourage people to have realistic expectations for their dogs, and to help them learn how to work with their dogs, rather then surrender them to a shelter. We also include information about keeping children and dogs safe together, the significance of vaccinations for young dogs, and getting the word out about the social responsibility of adopting a rescued dog rather than going to a breeder or pet store.

We are also currently working on a proposal to open a shelter facility, to better serve the needs of  the surrounding communities, which will include surrenders, adoptions, spay and neuter services, and medical assistance. As a 501 (c) 3 organization, we qualify for numerous grants and corporate dog food donations. We will be sharing our resources with our community, to make our part of the state a better place for everyone.
